Day1

Airport – Colombo

Ayubowan! Once your Diethelm Travel Sri Lanka Representative meets you personally on arrival, you will be introduced to your chauffeur guide and then begin your journey to uncover the wonders of this island.

Commence the tour with the first stop in Colombo. Colombo is Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and major port. A fine amalgamation of all the hues and cultures within this paradise isle. This chic metropolitan brings together the many facets of this island nation.

Take the panoramic tour around the Colombo Fort, Independence Square & Arcade, Galle Face Green, the old Parliament, Beira Lake and the bargain market at Pettah.

Day2

Colombo - Sigiriya

Set out to Sigiriya this morning, stopping en- route to make a stop at the Dambulla vegetable market and experience how locals engage with their daily marketing activities.

In the afternoon climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, One of the Wonders of the Ancient World.

Sigiriya, the marvelous Rock Fortress also known as Lion Rock is a rare jewel among the many treasures in Sri Lanka. The site was the domain of King Kashyapa whose aim was to build an impregnable fortress and within it, a heavenly abode.

Rising over the dry plains of the Matale district, the tough climb of 1200 footsteps up this flat-topped rock ends with the most scenic bird’s-eye view of the emerald plains and leafy villages beneath.

The skeletal layout of the ancient city within the fortress marvels its observers with the grandeur and complexity of 5th century urban planning of Sri Lanka.

On the way to the top one can observe the famous Sigiriya frescoes of the buxom, wasp-waisted maidens bearing flowers, amidst the wilderness and ancient ruins. The smoothly glazed ‘Mirror Wall’ located a few steps away has sealed the expressions of ancient visitors, inspired by the vibrant frescoes.

Day3

Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Minneriya – Sigiriya

Today you will proceed to visit the Polonnaruwa Ruins and learn more about the rich history and heritage that surrounds you.

Once the site of Sri Lanka’s second medieval capital; Polonnaruwa enthralls its visitors with a timeless reflection of the country’s glorious history.

The quaint landscapes studded with sites of archaeological importance are all well-preserved and lie on the east shore of the ancient man-made lake – Parakrama Samudraya (literal translation – sea of Parakrama). Peddling one’s way around the sites is the best way to observe and appreciate their antiquated glory as the sites are a little too overwhelming to explore just by foot. This tour will take you by bike, making the visit much more enjoyable, as these ancient sites stretch for several kilometers. Distance about 10 km, total duration about 3 hours, level of difficulty: easy

Later this afternoon gets a taste of Sri Lankan wildlife as you experience a jeep safari through the Minneriya National Park. Its safari time! Minneriya National Park, is nourished by an ancient man-made tank which provides shelter for troupes of toque monkeys, sambar deer, elephants and bird-flocks including little cormorants and painted storks and if you are lucky you may witness elephants bathing at Minneriya tank. From July to October you could witness the famous Elephant Gathering, a great opportunity to see a large herd of wild elephants.

Day4

Sigiriya – Matale - Kandy

Kandy is our next awaited journey, but before we explore this ancient city, we explore the Nalanda Gedige which is a collaboration of Hindu and Buddhist architecture, leaving you absolutely mesmerized by its iconic architecture, and let’s not forget that you will be standing at the center of Sri Lanka.

Tour around the Kandy city on arrival. In the afternoon Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic located on the premises of the Royal Palace of the Last King of Kandy which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha. This prime landmark of Kandy is venerated by Buddhists all over the world and one of the most visited sites in Sri Lanka.

Next, it’s a visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, which is renowned for its collection of a variety of orchids. This garden dates back to the reign of King Vikrama Bahu III, 14th century. Peradeniya is home to a large variety of ornamental plants and other creepers that are used to produce the special spices of Sri Lanka. There is a flourishing growth of huge tropical trees along the lawns. But the orchid house is the prime attraction of this garden. Tourists will find more than 300 varieties of exquisite orchids blooming in profusion. The spice garden sustains trees and plants used for the traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

Day5

Kandy – Gampola - Ella

In the morning climb the Ambuluwawa hill, situated in the center of the Gampola Kingdom established by the great Sinhalese King Buvanekabahu IV. After experiencing the beauty of the Panoramic view of the mountain ranges, continue on the journey through hills and tea plantations to Ella. The journey offers some breathtaking view across valleys and landscape.

You will witness tea plantations where you will see acres of jade green expanses, crowned with bright green leaves ready for the plucking, colorful dots of tea pluckers decorating the sloping, misty hills. Venture in to learn a little about the process from tea leaf to the tea cup.

Day6

Ella

The day in Ella gives you the opportunity to engage in a soft trek and admire the beautiful landscape and picture prefect moments. We explore the 9 arches bridge also known as the Demodara Bridge and watch the train pass us by through the tunnel. With a small 30-minute walk through the jungle, you will reach a piece of beautiful architecture that is hidden between lush green tea fields. We then climb Little Adams Peak.  Some of the views from treks in Ella are phenomenal with the region well known for its tea plantations and spectacular mountain ranges. If you want to enjoy some of the best views without needing to hike for hours, Little Adam’s Peak is the perfect trek, especially for an unforgettable sunset.

Day7

Ella – Diyaluma - Yala

Today we venture out to Sri Lanka’s second-highest waterfall, Diyaluma Falls, which offers a stunning natural pool to take a dip.  We then proceed to Yala to spend the overnight bordering the buffer zone of the National Park. Spend the evening in anticipation of the exciting safaris scheduled for the following day.

Day8

Yala

It’s an early morning game drive at Yala National Park. The most popular National Park in Sri Lanka offers magnificent sights of majestic elephants, fine-feathered peacocks, great black bears and agile leopards that steal away into the shadows of the thick foliage are unparalleled to any of the national parks in the country. Yala is known to have the highest density of Leopards in a geographical area, which makes many wildlife enthusiasts visit the park.

Enjoy a second safari in the afternoon.

Day9

Yala – Tangalle

Proceed to Tangalle for a relaxed afternoon, after visiting the Mukirigala Temple en-route. Late In the night visit the Rekawa Turtle hatchery and hopefully even get to witness turtles laying eggs.

Day10

Tangalle – Weligama – Galle

It’s a leisurely start to the day today, heading along the coast, passing small fishing villages. Witness the ever-famous stilt fisherman carefully balanced in the stilt, engaging in their daily catch.  This mode of fishing was more widely used all along the coast until the tsunami in 2004 which caused such activities to cease temporarily until recent years.

Arrive in Galle to spend the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day11

Galle

Explore the Galle Dutch Fort with its quaint streets and beautifully lined boutiques that sells antiques and souvenirs. This interesting tour can be done at your own pace to marvel at the fine architecture or listen to some interesting stories of the occupants within the Galle Fort.

Galle, a living time capsule home to the largest occupied Fort in Asia. Its quaint beauty extends beyond its golden beaches, cerulean waters, the picturesque views and the rich history while walking through the narrow, cobbled streets within the Fort.

In the evening, you may set out on a cycling tour through the rural side of Galle, passing through paddy fields and local village.
