A Walk in the Village

Here is an opportunity to offer a new experience to our visitors to Sri Lanka. “A Walk in the Village” is an inspiring and soul-searching activity. This experience offers visitors sight of the authentic life of rural families.

 

Unlike the common routine visits to tourist attractions, “A Walk in the Village” will allow our foreign guests to understand the way of life of our rural community, its culture and family situations. The positive feedback from our past visits, have inspired us to further enhance this activity to provide a great new experience to our visitors from overseas. Schedule for “A Walk in the Village”

Time: 5-6 hours
Oruthota Chalets will identify 5 rural families from the local village from various backgrounds (i.e.: family structure, modes of income etc.). Guests will visit the individual families at their homes and their lifestyles will be explained. Visitors are free to ask questions, walk around their humble abodes and learn about their way of life. The trek into the village will lead to the selected homes.

9.00 a.m.: Depart for “A Walk in the Village” after breakfast. Comfortable walking shoes and cotton clothing is advisable.

10.30 a.m.: Break for a herbal drink in the village

12.30 p.m.: Conclude the visit to the 5 families & Return to Oruthota Chalets
*When the reservoir waters are low a return along the river is made possible where guests can spend some time by the river.

1.30 p.m.: Lunch at the village
(Optional Package from groups below 10 pax)

Return to Oruthota Chalets’ vegetable plantation and Pick Your Own vegetable. Experience a cookery demonstration of this chosen vegetable and/or learn to prepare this dish in an authentic Sri Lankan style.

Thereafter enjoy a typical Sri Lankan meal along with the dish personally prepared by the visitors at the wattle and daub Gaame Gedera of Oruthota Chalets

Evening programme for “A Walk in the Village”

Enjoying a day and learning the lifestyles of the rural families of Sri Lanka, is not complete without some evening entertainment. In keeping with the concept of the day, Oruthota Chalets have included A Cultural Evening performed the school children of the local school. This event not only gives an opportunity to our rural children to bring out their talents and exhibit it to our international visitors, but on a greater magnitude helps Oruthota Chalets work towards their goal of Sustainable Tourism.

The Cultural Evening will include an hour of Song & Dance performed by the school children of the local school. An opportunity of this level is very rare, and the teachers in charge are so enthusiastic to accept this request and perform the evening of Song & Dance with pride.

The aim of Oruthota Chalets is now to promote Tourism with a Difference. We prefer to concentrate on activities which will helps us reach our goal of Sustainable Tourism. Therefore, we will now be gradually introducing a variety of activities with a difference which will definitely inspire and leave the foreign visitor with new found memories of Sri Lanka, which might even instil new values in life!!!
